Listening rituals

What does David listen to? Well, his introduction to music came from his father and grandad. He distinctly remembers his father’s listening routines – his big headphones and classic record selections – most notably the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald. And now, whenever he hears these records, it transports him back to those treasured memories. “Music has always played an important role in my life. I think it’s the same for everybody, it can take you back to somewhere, a specific time or place,” he tells us.

But while he was raised on the likes of the Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, David Bowie, and others, his musical tastes today are more eclectic, influenced by the setting he finds himself in.

“Wherever I am in the world, it affects what I listen to. Say I'm in the countryside, I’ll actually listen to country music – or I'll go to Ella Fitzgerald or Nina Simone.” David’s playlist list goes on: When in LA, it’s Kendrick Lamar; in New York, it’s Jay-Z or Biggie; in London, it’s Loyle Carner. 

And, although there’s a geographical pattern to his listening habits, who he’s with also inspires his tastes. Taylor Swift on the school run with his daughter and, of course, Spice Girls while on tour with his wife Victoria back in the day.
