Design philosophy

The DAC 8 was our first device designed to work solely as a converter and achieved its fantastic performance using the best technologies and uncompromising design.

Its successor is the DAC 8 DSD, the result of significant development work. Now it can even process DSD formats in ultra high resolution using a dedicated T + A True One Bit Converter. This means it has the latest technologies to transform any digital source into ultra high quality excellent analog signals.

The result is that the new DAC 8 DSD is the perfect unit for use with digital sources in a conventional High Level system that cannot directly process digital sources or is not of high enough quality. With its superior preamp and sophisticated volume control, the DAC 8 DSD can also drive very high quality power amplifiers or active speakers, allowing a complete system to take its place as the High Level command center.

We developed our high-performance AMP 8 power amplifier for exactly this purpose. This unit is based on the circuit technology of our HV and R series amplifiers; This simply means that, despite its small physical size, it offers excellent sound characteristics and very high power reserves.

The new MP 8 Multi Source Player completes the Series 8 series. The MP 8 is based on the R-series MP 2000 R MKII and is best described as digital multi-talent. It includes a wide range of digital sources from CD mechanism to Bluetooth module via high resolution streaming client, and handles them all to the highest audiophile quality standard. All in all, the Series 8 forms a comprehensive High-end system that is surprisingly small and compact yet delivers extremely high performance.

The cases are made entirely of aluminum: the base plate and top cover are machined from solid 6 mm thick aluminum plates, and we make the side and front panels from aluminum profiles extruded using special complex tools. All sockets and connections are made of gold-plated pure brass, eliminating all traces of ferromagnetic material that could cause interference. The heavy case rests on vibration-damped absorbing feet.

DAC 8 DSD

Basically, our new DAC 8 DSD can do everything needed to convert any digital source to the highest quality analog signals, including DSD up to the highest resolution possible. We have further developed the unit's outstanding preamplifier and included an audio control of all analog construction based on High-End Melf resistors. The "State of Art" output stage has a completely symmetrical design and discrete structure. It has a very low impedance and is equipped with symmetrical (XLR) and asymmetric (RCA) outputs. These features make the DAC 8 DSD more than just a Premium converter: it is also a premium preamplifier of premium quality.

The seriousness of our claim that the DAC 8 DSD is one of the best high-end converters in the world can be judged by the fact that we use two separate, sophisticated main power supplies for the analog and digital parts. A volume control is another unusual feature in a DAC, but it makes sense if the user wants to install active speakers or use the DAC 8 DSD as a preamplifier in conjunction with external power amplifiers. The volume control has a highly refined design and uses analog control elements down to low volumes as they prevent dynamic loss of quality even at low listening levels. Two gold contact relays are provided to bypass the volume control, meaning they can be completely removed from the signal path when not needed.

We paid special attention to the development of a very good headphone amplifier that can handle high currents. This further expands the practical applications of the DAC 8 DSD.

technology

The core of the DAC 8 DSD is the converter. As with our high-end players, this device uses superior quad editing with eight 32-bit converters from Burr-Brown in a double symmetric circuit. This circuit provides excellent compensation for non-linear situations, and residual background noise is reduced by about 6 dB, which is perfect in all situations with the 32-bit converters we used. The result is a dynamic performance that can hardly be improved with an excellent "black level", extreme linearity and distortion freedom in critical passages and even the smallest musical details. High-rate sampling is handled by a modern 56-bit signal processor where T + A has developed algorithms specific to our equipment and offers excellent timing characteristics. They are based on Bezier polynomials: Bezier interpolation and Bezier / IIR combination. A standard FIR filter and a short FIR filter are also provided. These options make it possible to choose the optimum sound quality to suit each piece of music. The DAC 8 DSD can even reverse the absolute phase of the audio signal at the digital level, thereby correcting false absolute overstated material.

To process DSD data that can be supplied via the PC-USB input, we have developed a unique, special converter: T + A True One Bit DSD Converter. This has a purely analog nature and creates a true one-bit converter because - unlike other manufacturers - we didn't want to use the DSD mode of a PCM converter. This enhancement enables DSD data to be processed in a true single-bit stream process, uncolored and without harmful additional conversion, as in our PDP 3000 HV High-End DSD / PCM player.

Fifteen years ago, we developed a method for galvanically separating the converter from the analog part for use in our state-of-the-art players: this provides full galvanic isolation of the digital part from the analog part using extremely fast digital isolators made by Silicon Labs. DAC 8 DSD. The result is to prevent source devices from entering the analog section. Computers in particular produce enormous levels of parasitic noise that could ruin the superior sound qualities of the audiophile output stage without this measure. The "State of Art" analog stages are completely separate and symmetrical and do not use OP-AMP. Their linearity is not a function of the "hard" negative feedback as is typical for OP-AMPS, but rather due to the quality of the circuit design and the used components selected and matched with very fine tolerances. Another unique feature of DAC 8 DSD is switchable analog bandwidth, which has proven very effective in our high-end players. The boundary frequency of the analog reconstruction filter of the DAC 8 DSD can be changed between 60 kHz and 120 kHz; The "ultra-wide" 120 kHz setting is naturally the key to excellent frequency response and phase characteristics when used with broadband output power amplifiers such as those in the T + A range. The phase linearity and signal accuracy of the "ultra-wide" circuit also have a perceptible effect in the audible range, allowing a clear sound image with exceptionally clear positioning and ultra-vivid dynamics.
