Mega stylish and very rare, the Aiwa LP-3000E turntable is spatially preserved and comes from collectors. Further information (without guarantee): The Aiwa LP-3000 is one of the ultra-rare, almost invisible treasures of hi-fi history. It was introduced in Japan at the end of 1978 and was still pure science fiction at the time, although two years after the Accutrac 4000 of 1976. The LP-3000 offered all the features of a PL-L1000 or PS-X800: quartz-lock direct drive, tangential tonearm, sensor buttons, LED pitch indicators, die-cast aluminum housing, 15-track programmability with forward and backward jump, repeat function, automatic record size detection, and even an automatic recording connection with Aiwa's cassette recorders from the era. Features & FunctionsWith these features, the LP-3000 was almost a year ahead of all others and was on par with Sharp's Optonica RP-9100, which was also released in late 1978. The catalog from which the two images published here were scanned was printed in May 1979, and the user manual also bears this date. Thus, at least the export model came out a little later than at the end of 1978. The LP-3000 was designated the LP-20X in Japan, but a Japanese catalog for it has yet to be found. Regardless of its name, the Aiwa didn't sell well, partly due to its high price tag: when the excellent Technics SL-10 cost FF 3000 in 1980, the LP-3000 brought in almost three times as much with its programmability, linear tonearm guidance and sci-fi looks: 8200 FF. Technical SpecificationsThe LP-3000 has three motors, all of which are BSL: a powerful motor for the turntable, another for the movement of the tonearm, and one for lifting the tonearm. The lateral movement of the tonearm is done via a threaded rod driven by this BSL motor – a down-to-earth solution that is not as "cool" as magnetic rails (PL-L1), but more elegant than Yamaha's flat belts + roller guides (PX-2 & PX-3). The tonearm itself has the tracking force and zero weight set at its rear end, while the little "knob" at the top in front of the bearing housing is actually a dial for adjusting the distance between the cartridge and the mat. The specifications for the tonearm's bearings are a bit alarming: 30 mg! It would be good to have another source for this, as this is quite stiff. However, if this is not a typo from 1979, the tonearm of the LP-3000 is therefore far from a Technics EPA-100 or a Sony PUA-1600L. The trace sensor function works with an LED and a phototransistor that detects weak or strong reflections on the vinyl surface. Since the included headshell holds the "plate sensor", using a different pickup/headshell pair requires some adjustments with spacers and specific orientations. Nothing, however, that would scare someone who has already put a pickup on a tonearm, and far from the hassle of doing it on a Revox B-790! An optional RC-20 chunky wired remote was also available; if Aiwa had really tried to market the LP-3000, it would probably have been named the RC-3000. The 3.2kg die-cast zinc platter contributes to an impressive total weight of 15.2kg. Build and componentsThe build quality is great, even if the circuitry is a bit scary: 23 ICs, 54 transistors, 60 diodes, and an LSI are a lot that can go wrong. However, it seems that specimens that still work today will continue to run forever, while those that failed then failed then. The same goes for the original Sony PS-B80 Biotracer from 1978: if it failed, it would have done so sometime in the last thirty years; if not, he won't.
