The dCS Vivaldi DAC APEX represents the latest and most sophisticated evolution of the British manufacturer's reference digital-to-analog converter. Launched in 2022, the "APEX" suffix indicates a profound hardware upgrade of the renowned Ring DAC™ technology, raising the bar for high-end audio reproduction even higher.

Unlike a simple software update, the APEX upgrade involved an almost complete redesign of the internal electronics (with the exception of the resistor matrix):

New Output Stage: The analog output stage has been completely redesigned to be more powerful and, above all, load agnostic. Thanks to an extremely low output impedance (3Ω on XLR), it can drive any cable or amplifier without any tonal changes.

Power Supply and Layout: The power supply section serving the Ring DAC has been improved and the symmetry of the summing stages has been optimized, further reducing noise and distortion.

Components: Many individual transistors have been replaced with composite pairs for superior thermal and operational linearity.

Ring DAC™ Technology

The beating heart remains the Ring DAC™, a proprietary dCS technology (not based on commercial chips like ESS or AKM):

Discrete Architecture: It uses a precision resistor array controlled by FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) software.

Operation: It operates at extremely high speeds (up to 6MHz) and uses a "mapping" system that distributes the load between the resistors in a quasi-random manner. This eliminates the linearity errors typical of traditional DACs, resulting in a sound free of digital "grain."
